Post 127 History
A Century of Service, Tradition, and Community
American Legion Post 127 has a proud history that stretches back more than a century, beginning in Buford, Georgia, and continuing today in Sugar Hill.
Established in the early years following World War I, Post 127 brought local veterans together through a shared commitment to service, patriotism, and fellowship. What began as a gathering place for veterans has grown into an important part of the American Legion Family and the surrounding community.
Throughout the years, our locations and membership have changed, but our commitment to veterans, their families, and the principles of The American Legion remains.

Our Early Years
Post 127 traces its beginnings to Buford, Georgia, in the early 1920s. Historical records identify the organization as Ivy Woodward Post No. 127, and early leadership records include Commander W. A. Plummer, who served in 1921.
Our Post's historic charter and early commanders' records serve as reminders of the veterans who laid the foundation for the organization we know today.
Their commitment to service established a legacy that generations of Legionnaires have continued to carry forward.
A Longstanding Part of the Community
For more than 70 years, from 1948 to 2019, Post 127 called Sawnee Avenue in Buford home.
During those decades, the Post provided veterans with a place for fellowship, remembrance, and community involvement.
Its contributions extended beyond the Post itself. Historical accounts document the Post's involvement in community activities, including sponsoring Buford's Tri-County Fair in 1934, bringing together residents, schools, and agricultural programs from surrounding counties.
In 2019, the Sawnee Avenue location closed as the Post prepared for its next chapter.
A New Chapter in Sugar Hill
On May 22, 2021, Post 127 celebrated the grand opening of its new home on Suwanee Dam Road in Sugar Hill, Georgia.
The move marked an important milestone in our history, providing a new facility to serve veterans, support Legion Family activities, and welcome the surrounding community.
On June 14, 2021, the City of Sugar Hill formally recognized Post 127 through a proclamation acknowledging its history, service, and contributions to the community.
While our home had changed, the mission remained the same.
Our American Legion Family
Post 127 is proud to be home to four branches of the American Legion Family:
- The American Legion
- American Legion Auxiliary
- Sons of The American Legion
- American Legion Riders
Each organization brings its own traditions, programs, and opportunities for service. Together, they help strengthen our Post, honor veterans, support families, and serve our community.
Honoring Those Who Served
Remembering and honoring our nation's veterans has always been central to The American Legion's mission.
Through Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances, Honor Guard ceremonies, flag retirements, and other patriotic activities, Post 127 works to ensure that the sacrifices of our service members are never forgotten.
Our commitment also extends to supporting veterans and their families, encouraging community involvement, and helping future generations understand the importance of service and patriotism.
Preserving Our History for Future Generations
The history of Post 127 belongs to the members who helped build it and those who continue its mission today.
Our historical charter, Past Commanders display, photographs, and other records help preserve that legacy. As additional information and historical materials become available, we hope to continue documenting the people, milestones, and traditions that have shaped our Post.
We welcome members and families who have historical photographs, documents, or memories of Post 127 to share them with us.
